Switch
Overview
A switch is a networking device that connects devices within the same network and uses packet switching to receive and forward data to the destination device. It primarily operates at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model.
Key Functions
- Forwards data within a network based on MAC addresses
- Creates separate collision domains for each switch port
- Learns and stores MAC addresses in its MAC address table
- Provides full-duplex communication between devices
OSI Model Layers
Switches primarily operate at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model. However, some advanced switches (Layer 3 switches) can also operate at Layer 3 (Network Layer), combining the functions of a switch and a router.
