Hub

Hub
Overview

A hub is a basic networking device that connects multiple Ethernet devices together, making them act as a single network segment. It operates at Layer 1 (Physical Layer) of the OSI model.

Key Functions
  • Broadcasts incoming data to all connected devices
  • Acts as a repeater, amplifying signals to extend network reach
  • Creates a single collision domain for all connected devices
  • Provides a simple way to connect multiple devices in a network
OSI Model Layer

Hubs operate at Layer 1 (Physical Layer) of the OSI model. They work with the physical aspects of the network, such as electrical signals, without any understanding of the data being transmitted.

Limitations

Hubs are considered largely obsolete in modern networks due to their inefficiency and security concerns. They have been largely replaced by switches, which offer improved performance and security.
